We Built This From Scratch!

This time last weekend, we were assembling our family room entertainment center! I am happy to say this morning it is in full use and more beautiful than I ever pictured it!

Last Friday night, my husband and I carefully measured, re-measured and measured again all the dimensions we would need to build this thing. My husband was like a mad scientist with the pencil behind his ear and his plans laid out on the kitchen table darting from one area to the next with the tape measure. We had to remeasure several times and I was already thinking, oh no, we are gonna mess this thing up.

Early saturday morning while I was feeding the kids, he took off to Home Depot to buy the wood and have them cut all the pieces to our specifications.

Then we set the kids up with technology in their hands, (one of the good things about this day and age) we got busy assembling what we envisioned in our minds.

I am so so glad my husband agreed to the electric fireplace we put into it, because it totally makes a difference in its appearance.

First thing we did was build a base for the fireplace to sit on and make sure the fireplace was secure inside the base with the proper framing.

Once the entertainment center was together, we sanded some areas and caulked all the drill holes, and I actually got it primed that evening ready to be painted the next day.

On Sunday we put the bookshelves together on each side of the entertainment center.

The rest was left to me for painting.

I got the bookcases primed on monday and all painted on Tuesday. Then it was important to make sure the paint was not only dry, but had hardened before setting anything on top of it. So we gave it a good 48 hours before we adorned them with books, DVDs and pictures to make sure nothing sunk into the paint.
I am totally in love with how it turned out. The fireplace is my favorite feature! The 50 inch TV is my husband’s favorite feature! 😉

I don’t think that it could have turned out any better and I’m so grateful for my husband’s many creative hats and his background in construction.  He really made this look beautiful!
